هذا كتاب "المنتخب من حديث شيوخ بغداد" أول كتاب يطبع للإمام أبي العلاء الفرضي، وأول جهد حديثي يظهر للإمام أبي حيَان الأندلسي، فقد كان أبو حيَان محدئاً حافظاً كما هو مفسَر لغوي متفنن.
وهذا المنخب قد ذكر بين دفتيه جمعاً كبيراً من شيوخ الإمام العلاء الفرضي المشهود له بكثرة الشيوخ وسعة الرحلة، وهو يلقي الضوء على عدد شيوخه، فقد سجل له في هذا المنتخب (104) من الشيوخ البغداديين وغيرهم..إذ ذكر في شيوخه أنهم قد بلغوا بالسَماع (750) شيخاً.
تظهر أهمية هذا المنخب من كونه بيَن لنا حال بغداد بعد احتلالها من قبل المغول، وما كانت عليه مدارسها ومساجدها من التحصيل العلمي رواية ودراية، فنرى الإمام الفرضي وهو ينتقل بين مساجدها ومدارسها وأحيائها متلقياً العلم من أفواه مشايخ بغداد، مما يبيَن للقارئ عودة الحياة العلمية إليها.
يشتمل الكتاب على دراسة في فصلين: شمل الفصل الأول الحالة العلمية والسياسية لعصر شيوخ بغداد المترجمين، مع ترجمة للحافظ أبي العلاء الفرضي، وترجمة الإمام أبي حيَان الأندلسي، واشتمل الفصل الثاني كل ما يتعلق بالمنتخب من منهج للمنتخب، وبيان أهمية المنتخب، وتوثيق نسبة الكتاب، ووصف النسخة المعتمدة في التحقيق.
