في سنة 304 هجرية خافت العامة ببغداد من حيوان يسمونه الزبزب ويقولون: أنهم يرنه في الليل على سطوحهم. وأنه يأكل أطفالهم وربما عض يد الرجل وثدي المرأة فقطعهما وهرب بهما. من وحي الحيوان تنطلق قصص جاسم المطير التي تدور في إسلام قصص رمزي، يستشفه القارئ بين السطور. ولماذا الميدان هو الملهم لهذا القاص. وهنا يقول جاسم المطير. تبدى صبح الجاحظ، بعد كل ليل، كانت أوبتي تنتهي في كتاب من كتبه. انصاع قلمي لصوت الجاحظ الذي عنى بي دون تردد أو ارتياب. وقد غَلَتْ أمامي صنعته في كتاب "الحيوان" فكان تأدبي فيه أثيراً، صار منه كتابي هذا.
غريب عنوانها على من لا يطالع التراث، وغريب أكثر على من لا يقرأ ابن الأثير والجاحظ. والأغرب أنها-كقصص-لا تشبه السياق. لا هي واقعية يحبسها المنهج، ولا هي خيالية تطلقها الفنتازيا إلى أماد رحبة.
جاسم المطير يمازج بين السياسي والمعرفي، بين الواقعي والمتخيل، يضمن النص أفكاره ويشحنها بالهدف، دون أن يثقلها بالهم السياسى، أو المباشرة أو التقديرية. أنه يصوغ تداعياته بمهارة.
شاركت في صوغ قصة الزبزب عناصر كثيرة. إلى جانب هذا الرعب المعتم الذي يرين على أجواء بغداد المنكفئة على نفسها لا يطل منها شيء على العالم أنها مطوية على هذا الرعب الذي لا صورة له، لأن حياتها إنما تتحرك وتنبض في ليلها العبوس، وهي تنزع إلى الخلاص من رعب الزبزب وغاشية كابوسه الذي يجثم على بغداد التي أمحت في عيونها صورة العالم كله، ولم يبقى شيء سوى هذا الجثام الهائل: الزبزب.
