تثير الوثائق التاريخية المتوافرة أن أطول فترة حكم فيها الفرس البحرين، كمستعمرين، لم تتجاوز المائة سنة، وكان ذلك في عهد الأسرة الساسانية قبل الإسلام.
ومع ذلك فإنهم لم يحكموا البلاد خلال هذه الفترة القصيرة حكماً مباشراً وإنما سكانها العرب هم الذين كانوا يحكمونها؛ وكان للفرس نوع من الإشراف البعيد مع التمتع ببعض الإمتيازات.
ومن المعلوم إن آخر حاكم عربي للبحرين في هذه الفترة هو المنذر ابن ساوى أحد بني عبد الله بن زيد؛ وكان يدين بالولاء للمناذرة في الحيرة، ولما كان المناذرة موالين للعرش الفارسي، لذلك كان ولاء البحرين للمناذرة يربطها بعجلة الدولة الفارسية بصورة غير مباشرة.
وعندما جاء الإسلام وضع حداً لهذه السلطة الدخيلة، وأعاد للمنطقة برمتها ألوانها العربية الزاهية، ومكن للسيادة العربية أن تستأنف نشاطها الصاعد بمعناها الواسع.
