الموضوع المحوري موضوع تحرير المرأة، وتحكم المرأة بأمورها، ودور الرجل في سلب المرأة دورها الذي تنشده، وربما عن قصد وجد الرجل في هذا الكتاب صكّ براءته من كل التهم التي تلصقها المرأة به، ففي كل صفحة وفي كل مثال نجد الكاتبة تؤكد على أن المرأة هي التي تريد ذلك! وإن المرأة عي التي تكتفي بأشيائها التي حصلت عليها! والحديث في هذه الدراسة موجه للمرأة في امرأة، نراها تشخص الحالة التي تعانيها في عيادتها النفسية، ثم تضع العلاج المناسب لها.
إن الطريف في هذه الدراسة دخول الكاتبة إلى نفسية بنات جنسها، لتنتقد نقطتين من أهم نقاط بحثها في تحليل شخصية المرأة، وليس بمقدور الرجل الباحث أن يدرسهما بهذه الدقة والعمق هما: التغابي تجاه الآخرين. ابتسامة المرأة ودورها في بناء شخصيتها، وتحوير ما بداخلها من شعور حقيقي إلى أن تتحول هذه الابتسامة مع الأيام غلى نقطة سلبية، تمكن الرجل من انتقادها بها، وربما إن التخلي عنها بسببها إذ يصف الرجل شخصية زوجته بالبرود والإحلال لابتسامتها الدائمة.
