هذا الكتاب عبارة عن تحقيق لنسخة خطية من حديث من حفظ على أمتي أربعين حديثاً" أو ما يعرف بـ "الأربعين الطوال" للحافظ ابن عساكر صاحب تاريخ دمشق توفي سنة 571 هـ. وقد عمل الأستاذ "حمدي عبد المجيد السلفي" على التحقيق في المخطوط وتخريج أحاديثه من أوله إلى آخره ليضعها بين يدي القارئ المسلم.
يجمع الكتاب الأربعين حديثاً وأسانيدها الصحيحة نذكر منها: - الحديث الأول: فيما ظهر من أمارات ببركته ووجد عند مولده وحالة تربيته. – الحديث الثاني: في وصف خلقه صلى الله عليه وسلم ومعرفة أحواله وخلقه. –الحديث الثالث: في كيفية ابتداء الوحي ومعرفة أول ما أنزل من القرآن عليه. –الحديث الرابع: في ذكر عروجه إلى السماء واجتماعه في مسراه. بجملة من الأنبياء ..) إلى آخر ذلك من أحاديث الأربعين الطوال. التي ختمت بـ الحديث الأربعون: في فضل حبيبة سيد المرسلين عائشة بنت أبي بكر الصديق أم المؤمنين.
