أصبح الإهتمام اليوم بالجودة ظاهرة عالمية، وأخذت المنظمات والحكومات في العالم لتوليها إهتماماً خاصاً، لا سيما المؤسسات الإستشفائية بغض النظر عن نوعها سواء كانت خاصة أم عامة، بل ويمكن القول أن الجودة باتت الوظيفة الأولى للكثير من المنظمات وفلسفة إدارية وأسلوب حياة تمكنها من البقاء والإستمرار في ظل المتغيرات البيئية المتلاحقة وسريعة التغير، وتزايد إدراك المستهلكين لمستوى الجودة فيما يقدم لهم من سلع أو خدمات، لا سيما الخدمات الصحية، وأصبحت بذلك المؤسسات الصحية تتنافس على تقديم خدمات ذات جودة عالية لما لها من تأثير كبير على حياة الأفراد والمجتمعات، فتحسين جودة ما تقدمه هذه المؤسسات من خدمات صحية يحقق منافع للفرد بصفة خاصة وللمجتمع ككل بصفة عامة، وعلى العكس تماماً فإن إنخفاض معدل توقع الحياة، ومن ثم إرتفاع عدد وفيات الأفراد في سن العمل أو خروجهم إلى المعاش المبكر بسبب المرض فإن ذلك يفقد الإقتصاد الوطني ما كان يمكن لهؤلاء الأفراد أن يسهموا به في الناتج الوطني لو أنهم تلقوا خدمات صحية ذات جودة عالية، تجعلهم يستمرون في الإنتاج بكامل طاقاتهم البدنية والذهنية، ولكي يتم الوصول غلى جودة الخدمات الصحية كمنتج نهائي للمريض لا بد من العمل على تخفيض الفوارق بين الخدمات الصحية المقدمة أو المنجزة فعلياً، وبين الخدمات الصحية المرغوبة من قبل المرضى، بهدف تحقيق رضاهم.
ونظراً لأهمية الجودة في خدمات الرعاية الصحية فقد سلط هذا الكتاب الضوء على العناصر التالية: الفصل الأول بعنوان: الجودة، الفصل الثاني بعنوان: الخدمات الصحية، الفصل الثالث بعنوان: الجودة وخدمات الرعاية الصحية، أما الفصل الرابع: المؤسسات الإستشفائية.
