أهي مفارقات رحّال أم مفارقات الحياة ما نقع عليه في جديد الدكتور ماهر بن مهل الرحيلي، يمكن القول أن الإثنان معاً يشكلان جواباً للسؤال. يقول المؤلف هي "مفارقات في الناس والطبيعة والنظم وفيّ أنا أيضاً، مفارقات محزنة أحياناً، ومثيرة أحياناً، وداعية إلى التأمل أحياناً أخرى".
نشير بداية إلى أن ثمة تلاؤماً بين عنوان الكتاب ومضمونه، فالدكتور الرحيلي يتخذ من أسفاره وتنقلاته في شرق الأرض وغربها مادة للروي ولتشكيل خطابه الفني الإبداعي هذا، فالقارىء يقف أمام عوالم إنسانية متعددة وخصبة يتعرف من خلالها على ثقافات وسلوكات مختلفة، ففي مطار لوس أنجلس حيث وصل المؤلف للتو يكشف في سائق التكسي الروسي (جارو) ذو العينين الواسعتين والملامح الخمسينية، "كان حديثه ينبىء بثقافة جيدة وحسّ فكاهي عال". ونظرات الكراهية الشديدة "في مطعم (شواتس) الذي يملكه الممثل الأميركي الشهير أرنولد شواترز نيجير" والإختلاف بين مطار نيويورك JFK المليء باليهود المتجهين للقدس، ومطار "أمستردام" هذا المطار يحتوي على شحنات سالبة تكفي قارة". وأما لذة الصلاة في الطائرة، فيقول عنها: "هل هو بسبب إستشعاري لقرب السماء السابعة؟ أم لبعدي عن الأرض موطن الشرور؟" ومن المغامرات اللطيفة محاولته "اجتياز النهر في غابة (بولتون آبي) في بريطانيا". وأول تجربة للتزلج على الجليد "كانت في المغرب" ووصوله إلى قمم الثلج بالتلفريك في فرايوخ في سويسرا برفقة العائلة عن طريق المطار ... وهكذا يشرق ويغرب لينتهي إلى نتيجة مفادها "إن خير وسيلة للعلاج هنا تكمن في السفر .. ليس السفر بناء على ما في أذهاننا .. بل السفر لبناء أذهان تعشق الحقيقة .. ولا شيء غير الحقيقة!".
