يختص هذا الكتاب في الجانب الفكري المتعلق بطبيعة البحث الاجتماعي (social research) في محاولة للوصول إلى الحقيقة. فمن المعلوم أن هناك إشكالية حقيقية بين البحوث التي تعتمد على مناهج كيفية، وتلك التي تعتمد على مناهج كمية. ولأن غالبية طلاب العلوم الإجتماعية يواجهون صعوبة في فهم علاقة النظرية (theory)، بالبحث الإجتماعي حاولت مؤلفه الكتاب أن تستطلع بعض المناهج الكيفية، أو المتسمة بالمرونة مثل التفاعلية الرمزية والهرمينوطيقا مع التركيز على حقيقة أن للمناهج الكيفية أهميتها، لأن التمسك بالحكم ليس دليلاً كافياً على الطابع العلمي لأني حقل معرفي.
فما هي طبيعة المنهج في علم الإجتماع تسأل المؤلفة: وكيف يتنوع هذا المنهج السوسيولوجي فيكون تارية وضعياً، وتارية أنثولوجياً، أو تاريخياً تارة أخرى، وما هو السبب الذي من اجله يتجه المنهج في علم الإجتماع اتجاهاً وظيفياً أو بنائياً، طوراً ماركسياً، أو جدلياً طوراً آخر؟ إن كل ذلك يستدعي برأي المؤلفة المزيد من الجهد وصولاً إلى تصور واضح لطبيعة المنهج في علوم الإنسان والمجتمع، وخصوصاً علم الإجتماع.
يضم الكتاب عدة فصول تبدأ بمدخلة تمهيدية تحت عنوان البحث عن الحقيقة من الميثولوجيا إلى العلم. يتبع ذلك فصول في: المنهج، أنواع الدراسات الاجتماعية، النظرية والبحث، عناصر عملية البحث الاجتماعي، المناهج والكيفية، المناهج الكمية، وتصنيف البيانات وتفسيرها.
