يعدّ هذا الكتاب محاولة جادة للكشف عن نظرية المعرفة ومناهج البحث عند أبي محمد علي ابن حزم الأندلسي، لبيان طبيعة المنهج الظاهري وخصوصيته المعرفية، ثم الوقوف على مناهج البحث التي استعملها في بناء ظاهريته، وتأتي أهمية هذه الدراسة من حاجة الدراسات التراثية إلى الاهتمام بمناهج العلماء والمفكرين، بعد أن انصرفت جهود الباحثين فترة طويلة إلى تحقيق التراث ونشره، كما تأتي هذه الأهمية من أن الاتجاه الظاهري في الفكر الإسلامي كان الأقل حظاً من العناية مما ترتب عليه كثير من سوء الفهم وقصور الإحاطة، وغير ذلك من الآثار السلبية على الساحة الفكرية.
وقد توصل الباحث في هذه الدراسة إلى أن ابن حزم قد شيد – في معالجته الموضوعات الفلسفية والعلمية والدينية – توجهات معرفية متميزة، تتصف بالاتساق والتكامل، وأنها تختلف عن التوجهات التي عرفت قبله أو كانت سائدة في عصره. وقد قادت هذه التوجهات "الحزمية" إلى الجمع بين العقل والنقل، وبين الحكمة والشريعة، بدون أي شغف بالتأويل.
وقد جاءت هذه الدراسة متماسكة في بنيتها، متسقة في منهجيتها، وتمثل جهداً متميزاً في الكشف عن طبيعة التفكير المنهجي عند علم من أعلام الأمة، وتمثل هذه الدراسة أنموذجاً لما يلزم القيام به في دراسات مماثلة لغيره من العلماء.والمعهد العالمي للفكر الإسلامي إذ يقدم هذه الدراسة إلى القراء، فإنه يأمل أن تكون فاتحة لدراسات منهجية ومعرفية معمقة للمذهب الظاهري ورجاله، وخصائصه، وبيان الفرق بينه وبين غيره من المذاهب الإسلامية.
