دبُّ الحياة في سوق المدينة في حلب رويداً رويداً.. وهي تبدأ بعد صلاة الفجر بقليل, كان أبو محمود أوَّل من يفتح محلَّهُ هو وصانعه, أما جاره أبو أحمد فقد كان آخر القادمين.
كان محلُّ أبو محمود متواضعاً يبيع فيه الأقمشة متوسطة الأسعار قليلة التنوع.. ولكنَّه كان كثير الزبائن, أمَّا جاره أبو أحمد فكان محُّله عامراً بالأقمشة الفاخرة مع تنوُّع كبير وزبائن أقلّ, كان يملك مكتباً خشبياً جميلاً في صدر الدُّكان, يضع عليه هاتفاً نصف آليٍّ يستخدمه في عقد الصفقات مع تُجَّار المدن الأخرى.. حماة.. حمص.. الشام.. و بيروت, وكانت له صلات حتى مع تجار في بغداد. كانا جارين متحابين في السوق رغم الفوارق بينهما.. التي كانت تتعدى قوَّةَ أبي أحمد المالية لتصل إلى الناحية الثقافية, وكان السبب في ذلك المدرسة, فقد ارتادها أبو أحمد لمدة عشر سنوات تقريباً, وكاد يصل إلى سنته الأخيرة فيها لولا مرض أبيه المفاجئ.. الأمر الذي اضطرَّه لترك المدرسة والمواظبة في المحلّ مع والده العليل.. الذي لم يلبث أن فارق الحياة بعد أن أصرَّ على تزويجه من ابنةِ عمِّه, وكان عمره حينها ثماني عشرة سنة.
