توخينا في كتابنا هذا الإحاطة بتطور الأدب الروسي في القرن التاسع عشر بصورة عامة، والتوقف، بشكل خاص، عند أشهر الكتاب الروس والإلمام بالطريقة الفنية المميزة لكل منهم والمضامين التي عبروا عنها والإضافات التي أغنوا بها الأدب الروسي وخصوصية الحقبة التاريخية التي عملوا بها، انعكست بشكل أو بآخر، على نتاجاتهم الأدبية وحددت في الوقت ذاته سمات الأدب وملامحه العامة. وقد أشرنا إلى أن عدم حل التناقضات الاجتماعية في روسيا واستمرارها، وعلى رأسها قضية تحرير الأقنان من النظام العبودي، تركت بصماتها القوية على الأدب الروسي وطبعته بطابعها فلم يستطع أي أديب-على الرغم من انحدار كثير من الأدباء من طبقة النبلاء-أن يغض الطرف على المآسي الإنسانية المفجعة التي كانوا يلمسونها في مختلف مظاهر الحياة الاجتماعية.
