"مراصد الإطلاع على أسماء الأمكنة والبقاع" كتاب أراد مؤلفه "صفي الدين عبد المؤمن بن عبد الحق البغدادي المتوفى سنة 739هـ" أن يكون مختصراً لمعجم البلدان الذي ألفه ياقوت وأصلاح ما فيه من خلل، وتحقيق لما به من خطأ.
أما غرضه... المقصود منه إنما هو معرفة أسماء الأماكن والبقاع التي على الربع المسكون من الأرض مما ورد به خبر أو جاء في شعر، وبيان جهته من الأرض وموضعه من أصقاعها، فما زاد على هذا القدر فهو فضل لا حاجة إليه في المقصود منه، فهو وإن كان فيه علم زائد عن المطلوب فهو خارج عن الغرض، وذلك مثل الإشتقاقات التي ذكرها في كثير من الأسماء عربية كانت أو عجمية، يعلم من أكثرها قطعاً أن ذلك في أصل الوضع ليس مشتقاً من ذلك ليكون علة في جعل الإسم علماً لذلك الموضع، وإن الإسم لا يكون مشتقاً إلا إذا كان في ذلك المسمى، كما سمَى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم المدينة طيبة، لما فيها من الطيب والفضل به، ورغب عن يثرب، لما فيه من لفظ التثريب (...) وقد كتبت في كتابي هذا ما لا بد منه مما يحتاج إليه من معرفة الأسماء الواردة في الأخبار والآثار وكتب المغازي والفتوح وغير ذلك بحيث يتمكن القارئ لها من ضبط الأسماء والتكلم فيها على الصواب، ويعلم جهاتها ومواقعها من أقطار الأرض...".
تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من كونه نسخة مخطوطة قديمة عمل المحقق على استخراج منها ما جاء في وصف الممالك من المدن والقرى وغير ذلك، وضبط الأماكن وحددهت حتى صار مادة أدبية ذات قيمة يرجع إليها الباحثون والأدباء والجغرافيون في دراساتهم. كذلك تأتي أهمية الكتاب من كون مؤلفه قد استند إلى معجم البلدان، ومعجم ما استعجم، والمسالك وغيرها من كتب البلدان، وكتب اللغة، ولا سيما تاج العروس واللسان لتتم الفائدة...
