كتاب "يوميات دبلوماسي في بلاد العرب" المذكرات التي نضعها بين يدي القارئ لا تطمح أن تكون مؤلفاً علمياً حول تاريخ الدبلوماسية السوفييتية، بل إنها مجرد ضوء يسلط على واحدة من الصفحات المجهولة لجمهرة القراء. إنها سلسلة أحاديث عن عمل السفارة السوفييتية في القاهرة التي كان المؤلف مسؤولاً عنها في فترة 1943-1944. وقد دشنت السفارة التي افتتحت في خريف 1943 بداية العلاقات الدبلوماسية بين الاتحاد السوفيتي ومصر.
كان نشاط السفارة آنذاك يشمل بلداناً عربية أخرى: سورية ولبنان وفلسطين. وغلى جانب ذلك وبفعل ظروف الحرب، كان ضمن اختصاص السفارة الاتصال مع حكومات يوغسلافيا واليونان، ورومانيا فيما بعد.
إن كتاب "يوميات دبلوماسي في بلاد العرب" موضوع لجمهرة واسعة من القراء. لذا فإن المؤلف حاول، حيثما تسنى له ذلك، تفادي الأسلوب الأكاديمي الجاف، وأثر السرد الحي الذي جسد إلى جانب الأحداث الدبلوماسية والسياسية العامة، أحداثاً ذات طابع شخصي إلى هذا الحد أو ذاك.
