كان الجويري، مؤلف هذا الكتاب، من أوائل الدعاة إلى الإسلام في شبه القارة الهندية، وقد أسهم في تحول عدد كبير من سكان لاهور إلى الإسلام. وقد ألف كتباً كثيرة ضاعت ولم يبق إلا كتابه هذا الذي نقلب صفحاته، والذي ارتبط اسمه دائماً باسم مؤلفه.
ويعتبر الكتاب أقدم مؤلف في التصوف باللغة الفارسية، وأول كتاب منظم في الأصول النظرية والعملية للتصوف. وقد نوّه بقيمة هذا الكتاب الشرقيون والمستشرقون ممن عنوا بدراسة التصوف الإسلامي، سواء منهم من بحثوا في هذا الموضوع، أو من قصروا جهودهم على نشر كتب التصوف وترجمتها.
