إن الزمن حاضر بالقوة وبالفعل معاً في حياتنا اليومية وفي الأدب، ولا يمكن لحدث ما أن يحدث بلا زمن، كما أن الشخصيات تتكون في الزمن ومن خلاله، وتأتي ضرورة دراسة الزمن من أهمية هذا العنصر وكونه أساساً في البناء الروائي، ولاسيما في الروايات الجديدة التي تخوض غمار التجريب في المستوى الزمني.
أما سبب اختيار الرواية عموماً والإماراتية تحديداً، فذلك يعود إلى شغف شخصي بالرواية بوصفها جنساً أدبياً يفحص بصورة مستمرة ثيمات الوجود الإنساني – على حد تعبير ميلان كونديرا – أما اختيار الرواية الإماراتية، فمتصل برغبة جامحة في سد الثغرة المتمثلة في النقص المتسع، ولاسيما في مجال النقد الإماراتي، وأقد بالنقد الإماراتي أمرين،
الأمر الأول: النقد الذي يتصدر له باحثون إماراتيون،
والأمر الثاني: النقد المنهجي العميق المتخصص الذي يتناول دراسة الروايات الإماراتية وتحليلها وإبراز جمالياتها، إذ تكاد الساحة الثقافية المحلية تشكو من الأولى، وتطمح إلى مزيد من العمق والتركيز في الثانية، إضافة إلى أن ذلك الاختيار نابع من إيماني بقدرة النص الإماراتي في بعض نماذجه العالية، على تحقيق نتائج متقدمة.
ويرتكز هذا الكتاب على المنهج الوصفي التحليلي الذي ينحو نحو الدراسة المنظمة والمتتبعة للزمن في الرواية الإماراتية من خلال استنطاق النصوص الروائية الإماراتية استناداً إلى التحليل والتفسير والربط، إضافة إلى الاستعانة بالاتجاه الشكلي في الاعتماد على بعض مصطلحات منهج جيرار جينيت القائم على دراسة العلاقة التي تربط بين زمن الحكاية وزمن القصة، دون الالتزام التام بالمنهج الشكلي، إذ ارتأيت أن أربط النص برؤيته وعمقه أحياناً.
وقد أفاد الكتاب من شعرية باشلار في الولوج إلى عمق الأمكنة واتصالها بالبعد الإنساني عن المكان والربط بينه وبين مناطق الدفء في حياة البشر مما يعطي الفاعلية لمخزن الذكريات والتجارب، كما أفادت الدراسة من مفردات باختين الزمكانية في دراسة اتصال الزمان والمكان في الرواية.
