المؤلَّف الذي يدور العمل عليه في هذه الصفحات هو كتاب "الضوء اللامع" للسخاوي الذي أطال وأفاض في ترجمته لرجال القرن التاسع الهجري، وهو دون شك أوسع مصنف يؤرخ لرجال قرن هجري بمفرده، فعمل المؤرخ عمر بن أحمد بن علي بن محمود الشماع الحلبي أن يقرب مقاصد السخاوي ويقدم للقراء والباحثين لبّ كتاب "الضوء اللامع" فقدم هذا المصنف الذي نقلب صفحاته والذي لم يُخلِهِ من فوائد إضافية تمثلت في بيان سنوات وفيَّات البعض ممن ترجم لهم السخاوي في كتابه، وماتوا بعده في الربع الأول من القرن العاشر، فجاء كتاب الشماع هذا متقناً كأحسن ما يمكن أن يبلغه مختصر لكتاب طويل، دون أي قدر من التقصير في الإتيان بجميع محاسن الأصل.
وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً حيث حلّيت هوامشه بفوائد قيمة تتصل بتخريج الأحاديث وبضبط النصوص، وتصحيح الأخطاء، وشرح الغريب، والتعريف بالأعلام والبلدان والمواضع، مع فهارس علمية له تقرب الفائدة منه للباحثين.
