إن ما حمل الإمام محي الدين ابن النحاس الدمشقي المتوفى سنة 814 هـ على تدوين رسالته التي بين أيدينا تنبيه الغافلين عن أعمال الجاهلين وتحذير السالكين من أفعال الهالكين هو نصح من غفل عن الدين ودعوته إلى الرجوع إلى الله ورسوله واتباع الدين الإسلامي، وليحيط الباحث بجميع جوانب موضوعه، قسّم كتابه إلى سبعة أبواب ذكر في أولها فضل الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر مبينا أنه فرض كفاية، أما في الباب الثاني فتطرق إلى موضوع كيفية الإنكار ودرجاته، وفي الثالث نبه الغافلين من ترك ما أوجب الله تعالى من الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر، وذكر بعض ما ورد في التغليظ في ذلك والتشديد، كما وذكر الأحوال التي يسقط فيها الوجوب ويبقى الاستحباب، أما في الرابع فتحدث عن الإثم التي يلحق من أمر الناس بالمعروف ولم يفعله، أو من نهى عن منكر وهو يفعله. أما في الخامس فذكر جًمل من الكبائر والصغائر، وفي السادس ذكر أمورا نهى عنها النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. وفي السابع: ذكر جُمل من المنكرات والبدع والمحدثات. وكل من هذه الأبواب ضمنه فصول ومسائل مهمة رائدة فيها الدليل، وحسن الاقتداء بمن قبله من أئمة كتبوا في ذلك كالإمام الذهبي في كتابه "الكبائر" والعلامة ابن القيم في كتابه "الكبائر" كذا العلامة ابن الحاج في كتابه "المدخل" والإمام الشاطبي في كتاب "الاعتصام" والحافظ الحكيم الترمذي في كتابه "المنهيات"... كما أكثر من الاستدلال بكلام شيخ الإسلام ابن تيميه وكان في كل ما كتب متبعا نهج السلف الصالح من التمسك بالسنة والتحذير والنهي عن الابتداع في الدين وعن مشابهة الكفار والمشركين. ولأهمية الكتاب عُني بإخراجه في هذه الطبعة التي بين يدينا محققا، وبالرجوع لعمل المحقق نجد أنه يتمثل بـ : أولا – نسخ الرسالة وضبط نصها، ثانيا: عزو الآيات القرآنية المستشهد بها في المتن، وتخريج الأحاديث النبوية، وتنقيدها والحكم عليها، وبيان وجه الصواب في الحكم عليها.
