يشتمل هذا الكتاب على مكارم أخلاق ومحاسن أهل البيت عليهم السلام وهم يتبعون رسول الله كما في قوله تعالى: "لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة..." واتباعه وأولهم أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام. فبرأي المؤلف "العلم –ويعني علم الأخلاق- مقدم على العمل به، فوجدت في كلام أمير المؤمنين علي عليه السلام وما يحتوي على حقيقة سير الأنبياء وهي الإنقطاع بالكل عن الناس إلى الله في الرجاء والخوف وعن الدنيا إلى الآخرة". من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليس ليستوعب علم الأخلاق فقط، وإنما ليضم بين دفتيه أهم أبحائه، وأبلغها أثراً في حياة الناس وقد قسم إلى قسمين: القسم الأول في الأخلاق العامة: مثل الصدق علاج الكذب، علاج الغضب، مساوئ التكبر...إلخ. أما القسم الثاني فجاء في الحقوق والواجبات مثل: الحقوق الإلهية ومنها: العبادة، الطاعة، الشكر... وحقوق الأئمة الطاهرين ومنها: معرفتهم موالاتهم، طاعتهم... وحقوق العلماء ومنها: توفيرهم، برهم... وحقوق الوالدين والأولاد ومنها: بر الوالدين... ثم الحقوق المزيفة مثل: السفور، تحرير المرأة والمقارنة بين تحريرها في الإسلام، والحضارة الغربية... وأخيراً حقوق الجسد وحقوق النفس ومنها: تثقيف النفس، وإصلاح السريرة...
