العلامة شبلي هو محمد شبلي بن حبيب الله، لقب نفسه بالنعماني لولعه الشديد بالإمام أبي حنيفة النعمان، ويعد كتاب "سيرة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم" من أهم مؤلفاته، وقد كتب منه جزأين وأتمه تلميذه سليمان الندوي حتى صار سبعة أجزاء، وهو مطبوع باللغة الأردية. وللكتاب دور بارز في الوقوف في وجه الصليبية الحاقدة التي تمثلت في هجمات المستشرقين الشرسة على الإسلام ونبي الإسلام سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم. وقد قام الدكتور محمد علي غوري بترجمة مقدمة الكتاب إلى اللغة العربية، كما قام بعمل ترجمة للمؤلف ودراسة للكتاب. وقد نالت هذه المقدمة في فن السيرة الأردي شهرة مقدمة ابن خلدون في علم الاجتماع والتاريخ، حيث لخص العلامة شبلي النعماني في مقدمة كتابه كل القضايا الرئيسة التي تناولها في كتابه، مثل الفرق بين فن السيرة وعلم التاريخ، والفرق بين كتب السيرة وكتب الحديث، والفرق بين الدراية والرواية، ومفهومهما عند المحدثين وكـُــتّاب السيرة، وناقش عدة قضايا مثل عبارة : كل الصحابة عدول، كما تطرق في نبذ مختصرة لأمهات كتب السيرة وعلق عليها. ومن جميل ما تطرقت إليه هذه المقدمة علاقة الغرب بالسيرة النبوية، وكيف بدأت بخرافات وأوهام ثم انتقلت في القرن السابع عشر والثامن عشر إلى دراسة تاريخ الإسلام وسيرة الرسول صلى الله عليه معتمدة على المصادر العربية، ثم عملت على ترجمة المصادر والمراجع الشرقية وطبعها ونشرها، حتى وصلت إلى التأليف فيها، وذكر النعماني 37 من المؤلفات الغربية في الإسلام والسيرة، وبيّن أسباب انحرافات المؤلفين الغربيين. وختمت هذه المقدمة بالأسس التي اختارها المؤلف واعتمد عليها في كتابه.
