يقول تادرس يعقوب الملطي في مقدمة الكتاب بأن الأب يوحنا فم الذهب يرسم بسيرته وعظاته وكتاباته أيقونة حية لحياة الكنيسة التي لا يحصرها زمان ولا يطويها تاريخ. ففي سيرته تختبر الكنيسة السماوية المتهللة، المعاشة على الأرض وسط الآلام. ومضيفاً يقول بأن الأب يوحنا أحب الحياة الملائكية، وعشق البتولية، ومارس التسبيح والترنيم، وإنطلقت نفسه من يوم على يوم نحو الأبديات، لكنه في هذا كله لم يتجاهل الواقع كإنسان يحمل جسداً ويسكن على الأرض بين البشر، لذا مارس إيمانه بالأبدية خلال واقع عملي، سواء في بيت أمه، أو ديره أو وحدته، أو في دار الأسقفية كاهن. فكانت له عظات ينتفع بها الخواص والعوام والتي فيها تحذيرات التي منع بها من الزهو واللهو والعجب والإفتخار، وأمثال ضربها لمن تمسك بشرف الجنس ولم يلتفت إلى شرف النفس، وأقوال أمر بها بالصدقة وأنهى من تأخيرها عن أهلها في كل مكان وزمان وفي كل حال. مكرراً القول فيها على نفع الطالب والمطلوب، وعلى أنها ستارة للعيوب وغافرة للذنوب وباذرة حبات المحبة الآلهية في القلوب. كما أنه وفي عظاته حرض المؤمنين على القيام بغرضي الصلاة والصيام، والمحبة في الله لجميع الأنام. فجاءت عظاته بمثابة إحياء لنفوس كانت قد ماتت، وتحوير لقلوب من أسر الذنوب، وإصلاح لإعوجاج طبائع وإعادتها إلى إستقامتها. وكانت هذه العظات في زمانه تحتمل الإطالة والتوسع في الألفاظ، فكان أن أطال الأب يوحنا فيها وأطنب، وتوسع في عباراته وأسهب. لذا قام جامع هذه العظات بإختصارها وبتسهيل ألفاظها وعباراتها وإيجازها مع حفظ معانيها وإبرازها، لمخاطبة أهل هذه الزمان بما يفهمونه من الألفاظ المألوفة. ملطفاً بذلك حجمها بسبك العبارات المعروفة، جامعاً في ذلك بين البيان الشافي، والإختصار الكافي، لإدراك غاية المرام في مراميها.
