تعتبر الوحدة اليمنية هدفاً استراتيجياً من أهداف ثورتي 26 سبتمبر/أيلول و14 أكتوبر/تشرين الأول في شطري اليمن. ولكن طريقة تحقيق هذه الوحدة تختلف اختلافاً جوهرياً بين الشطرين، بل ويقف الشطران على طرفي نقيض في سبيل تحقيقها. وقد مرت الوحدة اليمنية بمراحل مختلفة سجلت خلالها أعلى درجات الانفصال، وفي الوقت الذي يُسمع فيه بتقارب الشطرين، وتوقيع اتفاقيات بينهما، يلاحظ أيضاً، تمسك الشطرين بالنظام السياسي والاقتصادي والاجتماعي الذي اتبعه كل منهما منهجاً لمسيرة بلاده. والباحث خالد بن محمد القاسمي يرصد في هذا الكتاب هذه المراحل للوقوف على مدى جدية الاتفاق الأخير بين الشطرين في صنعاء (مايو/أيار 1988)، وذلك من خلال إلقاء الضوء على مسيرة الشطرين منذ ظهورهما كدولتين مركزيتيين في اليمن وحتى اليوم.
