اتخذت محاكاة المؤلفين الأندسيّين للمؤلفين المشارقة ومعارضتهم في التأليف الأدبية عدة صور، منها: التأليف في طبقات الشعراء والكتاب.
ولئن كان من دوافع التأليف في هذا اللون ن الكتب محاكاة مؤلفي المشرق العربيّ، إلاّ أنّ لهذا الضرب من التأليف دلالة أخرى هي ميل الاندلسيّين إلى تصنيف الشعراء والكتاب إلى طبقات ومستويات من أجل تمييز الرفيع من الوضيع والغثّ من السمين، وتشجيعاً للشعراء والكتاب على الإلتزام بمعايير التفوّق والتميّز والأخذ بمقوّمات المنافسة فيما بينهم أوّلاً ثم بينهم وبين أدباء المشرق ثانياً.
كما أنّ هذه المؤلفات - بما تحدّده من معايير التمايز بين الطبقات - تمثّل جهوداً أندلسيّة مبكّرة في تاريخ النقد الأدبي عند العرب.
وكتاب طبقات الشعراء بالأندلس لأبي سعيد الجياني هو أول هذه الجهد في هذا الإتجاه.
