شاعرة العراق أو رائدة الشعر العربي، كما يلقبها بعض الأدباء نازك الملائكة بغدادية المسقط تنقلت في عدة دول وحصلت من جامعة كنساس على شهادة ماجستير في الأدب المقارن، وعملت في سلك التدريس في جامعة البصرة، وعاشت فترة في بيروت، ثم ختم المقام حيث توفيت في القاهرة ودفنت هناك.
لم تكن نازك الملائكة إلا وليدة عائلة ثقافية عريقة فأبوها الأستاذ صادق الملائكة مؤلف له عدة قصائد منشورة في الصحف العراقية، ومن هذه البيئة الثقافية انطلقت نازك إلى عالم الأدب والتفوق واحتلت مكانتها الشعرية بما قدمته إلى الشعر العربي من تحديث.
تشارك نازك ابن بلدها الشاعر بدر شاكر السياب في أسبقية كتابه الشعر الحر وكان ذلك جدلاً ما زال قائماً بين الأدباء في أسبقية الموضوع، إلا أنها حسمته بعد أن اعترفت بأن الشعر الحر كتب أول مرة سنة 1932م، وكانت قصيدتها الكوليرا أولى قصائدها المتحررة من عمود الشعر العربي قد كتبت سنة 1947م.
ثائر شعر نازك في الأدب الغربي ولا عجب في ذلك كونها قد تخرجت من إحدى الجامعات الغربية في الأدب المقارن وقد ظهر ذلك جلياً في قصائدها، وتعتبر نازك من الشاعرات ذات الطبيعة الهادئة والنظرة البائسة، حيث يكثر في شعرها تعابير الملل واليأس والقبور والرفض والتساؤل عن الغيب والمستقبل المجهول، فأدى بها المطاف إلى العزلة الاختيارية في القاهرة، وتوفيت هناك بسبب هبوط حاد في الدورة الدموية.
تركت نازك مجموعة رائعة من الأعمال الشعرية والنثرية للأدب العربي حيث ساهمت في إيقاظ الشعر العربي من سبات طويل.
