الناس في هذا الزمان قد تكاثرت عليهم الفتن، وتفتحت عليهم أبوابها، كما أخبر بذلك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فكثر كلامهم فيها، بالحق تارة، وبالباطل أخرى، وبالدليل والبرهان مرة، وبالجهل والهوى مرة أخرى، فوقعوا في تعارض الآراء واختلاف الأهواء، فزادت الفتن واضطرب الناس. وإذا كان الواجب على من تكلم في أي باب من أبواب العلم أن يتكلم بعلم، ويزين كلامه بالحلم، فإن باب الفتن أولى وأحرى لما يترتب عليه من الأحوال والأفعال والتصرفات، العامة والخاصة.
فلازم على كل من تكلم في هذا الباب ونظر فيه، أن يتتبع ما ورد فيه في الكتاب وصحيح السنة، وما ورد فيه عن السلف الأمة، حتى يقع على الدليل، ويرى كيف يكون العمل والتنزيل.
وهذه الرسالة إنما هي محاولة لتأصيل هذا الباب، بالنظر فيما جاء فيه من النصوص، والآثار، ومواقف السلف الأبرار، حتى تتضح المسألة ويبين الحق. هذا وقد رتبت على مسائل ليكون ذلك أنشط للقارئ، وأروح لنفسه وفكره.
وهي لا تهدف لجمع ما ورد في كل فتنة من الفتن كما هو الشأن في الكتب المؤلفة في ذلك، وإنما المقصود بهذه الرسالة النظر في هذه الفتن من حيث فتن واستنباط شيء من فقهها من خلال نصوصها، ولذا فهذه الرسالة عامة جميع الفتن.
