"الطريق إلى العبودية" كتاب جريء وضعه إنسان لم يجد بديلاً عن الحرية الفردية ولم ير في غير الليبرالية وسيلة إلى المزيد من الاقتصاد القوي والمزدهر. فقد آمن مؤلفه فريدريش هايك بالحوار، ودعا إلى قيام مجتمع مدني قادر على أن يخط طريقه، بوعي وإدراك، بعيداً عن أساليب الفرض والتسلط والطغيان بحجة الحرص على الخير العام أو مصلحة الجماهير.
وقد صدر هذا الكتاب خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، ولم يحظ آنذاك، بالاهتمام الذي يستحق. لكنه اليوم، يثير اهتمام الباحثين والنقاد في ضوء ما ورد فيه من نظريات وآراء ودراسات واقتراحات تتأكد صوابيتها.
ففي مقاربته للمسألة الاقتصادية الشاملة، بدا "فريدريش هايك" صاحب رؤيا اقتصادية تتحقق في هذه الأيام. لقد ركز على الحرية الفردية واستمات في الدفاع عنها ورأى في تدخل الدولة حداً من هذه الحرية وتعطيلاً لها. وتشبث بالمبادرة الخاصة، ضمانة لمجتمع إنساني حرّ تتعدد فيه فرص العمل وتتنوع. فكان هذا التشبث نبوة أكد حصولها سقوط الأنظمة التوتاليتارية وتراجع الاشتراكية وفشل القطاع العام في معالجة المسائل الحياتية معالجة فعالة مجدية.
