تمتاز الصحافة العراقية بميزة قد تسبق فيها الصحافة العربية في بدء نشوئها وتطورها، تلك هي سرعة إنتشارها في أنحاء القطر وتعدد الإمتيازات في أكثر من مدينة، خاصة بعد إعلان الدستور العثماني عام 1908 حتى بلغت في بداية الثلاثينات المئات من الصحف اليومية والأسبوعية والمجلات الشهرية السياسية والأدبية في الموصل وبغداد وكركوك والبصرة والنجف الأشرف، بينما صدرت في الدول العربية بعض الصحف السياسية والأدبية في عواصمها فقط، كما يعتبر الصحافة العراقية أغنى المصادر التاريخية والوطنية والفكرية لا في العراق فحسب بل في الوطن العربي.
إلا أنه رغم أهمية تلك الصحف منذ صدور الزوراء عام 1869 حتى يومنا هذا في تدوينها وتسجيلها وقائع تطور العراق السياسي الوطني والإجتماعي والفكري، ورغم كونها من أهم المصادر الوثائقية والتاريخية لحركة التطور في العراق والوطن العربي، ما تزال الصحافة العراقية تفتقر إلى التدوين والتاريخ إلا ما ندر من تلك المصادر التي تسجل فيها نشوئها وتعددها وتطورها من حيث المضمون والشكل.
وهكذا تبرز كل عام أهمية تدوين تاريخ وسيرة رجال الصحافة الذين شاركوا في مسيرة البلاد الطويلة عبر سنوات النضال القومي والوطني منذ تأسيس الحكم الأهلي وحتى يومنا هذا، وبتدوين تاريخ الصحافة العراقية، إنما يدون المؤرخون والمعنيون بالفكر والقلم التاريخ السياسي والإجتماعي والفكر للعراق بلداً وشعباً ومستقبلاً.
