مدينة الصدر مدينة عجيبة فإنسانها على الرغم من معاناته الكبيرة فإنه يعشقها عشقاً أثيرياً ولا يتنازل عن هذا العشق ولو كلفه ذلك حياته، وبين خوفي وذعري رحت أفكر وأعيد التفكير مراراً، بيد أني حسمت أمري وطردت ترددي أخيراً وتوكلت على الله وقررت أن ألج عالم مدينة الصدر، وأهلها الطيبين، وبتقديري المتواضع أن هذه المدينة هي واحدة من المدن التي تمتلك خصوصية وثراءً وغنى من حيث أصل وجودها مروراً بالتطورات التي رافقتها، وهي تطورات لا شك مصحوبة بالمعاناة المؤلمة والتي كان لها الأثر الواضح في صناعة تاريخ هذه المدينة.
إن مدينة الصدر وعلى الرغم من أهميتها وعظم حجمها السكاني وثقلها المجتمعي تكاد تكون مجهولة تاريخياً لدى الباحثين والناس على حد سواء، إذ لم يكتب عنها ولم يتم تناولها في دراسة حقيقية، فهي المدينة التي تخلو أو تكاد من أي دراسة أو بحث علمي رصين، كما أن الكتابات القليلة التي تناولتها وغالبها صحفي غير ناضج لم تنصفها، إذ غالباً ما يتم التعتيم على الدور الذي لعبه أهلها في إنتاج قيم وأخلاقيات مقرونة بصفحات جهادية لا ينكرها إلاّ جاحد.
إن هذا الكتاب يتناول المدينة على أنها قيمة إجتماعية فاعلة ومتفاعلة وليس كتلة بشرية تشغل جغرافية معينة وحسب (على الرغم من أن الفصل بين المفهومين يبدو عسيراً) غير أننا بذلنا جهداً كبيراً لتقديم ما وددنا تقديمه، لهذا فالقارئ سيجد فضلاً عن الحديث عن مراحل التطور للمدينة والتباين الواضح بين المدينة أمس والمدينة اليوم سيجد أيضاً بذات الوقت كلاماً حول مظاهر تاريخ المدينة سواء كان هذا التاريخ سياسي أم إجتماعي أم رياضي... إلخ.
