تكتسب الدراسات المتخصصة بالتاريخ الاقتصادي أهمية كبرى كونها تمس الأوضاع الداخلية للمجتمع، وتوضح آثار السياسة على الاقتصاد، وتكشف جوانب مهمة من فترات الازدهار والكساد التي تتعرض لها المجتمعات بين حين وآخر. وفي حين حظي التاريخ السياسي لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة-التي كانت تسمى قبل استقلالها واتحادها عام 1971 بالإمارات المتصالحة أو إمارات الساحل-باهتمام الباحثين ودرس من جميع جوانبه، لم يحظ الجانب الاقتصادي بالاهتمام نفسه، وتدور الدراسات القليلة التي تطرقت إلى هذا الموضوع حول اللؤلؤ وتجارته.
غير أن ما يميز هذه الدراسة التي بين أيدينا أنها جاءت لتقدم عرضاً تفصيلياً للأوضاع الاقتصادية التي كانت سائدة في إمارات الساحل خلال الفترة الممتدة من 1862 لغاية 1965، حيث تمثل هذه المرحلة بداية إدخال الإنجليز سفنهم التجارية للعمل على خط التجارة بين الهند والخليج العربي من أجل السيطرة على حركة الملاحة في الخليج العربي. وقد كانت هذه الخطوة نقلة حاسمة أثرت في الواقع الاقتصادي لمدن المنطقة، كما تمثل نهاية لمرحلة ما قبل النفط. ولكي تأتي هذه الدراسة كاملة وشاملة بتغطيتها لمختلف الأوضاع الاقتصادية استعان الباحث في معظم أقسام دراسته بالوثائق البريطانية المنشورة وغير المنشورة لأنه اعتبرها مادة بحث أصلية يمكن الاعتماد عليها كمصدر رسمي لتاريخ الخليج العربي الحديث والمعاصر، كما واستعان بمجموعة من الكتب الأجنبية أهمها رحلة الرحالة الدانماركي كارستن نيبهور للمنطقة في أواخر القرن الثامن عشر، كما وقام بمقابلة مجموعة من المدرسين الذين قدموا للإمارات في بداية التعليم النظامي في الخمسينات، بالإضافة إلى بعض الشخصيات الأخرى وهم الدكتور صباح جاسم ومحمد علي الكوسى وعبد الله جاسم المطيري، ويبث خلاصه ما توصل إليه في كتابه هذا ليأتي صورة صادقة عن ما يرويه من موضوعات هامة. وليضفي المؤلف على كتابة نوعاً من الشمولية فى تغطية الحوادث والأخبار بث في كتابه مجموعة من الخرائط الهامة والرسومات البيانية والصور الفوتوغرافية القديمة التي تم التقاطها لمدينة أبو ظبي منذ أواخر الخمسينيات.
