يعرف علم الموائع بأنه ذلك العلم الذي يبحث في سلوك الغازات والسوائل من نواحي متعددة.
على الرغم من التطور الكبير الذي طرأ على علم الموائع والتعدد في فروعه إلا أن الأساسيات في هذا العلم لا زالت نفس أساسيات ومبادئ علم الميكانيكا التي تنطبق على المواد الصلبة على الرغم من إختلاف التسميات.
فالإجهاد مثلاً في المواد الصلبة يسمى ضغط في علم الموائع والوحدات المستخدمة هي نفسها في الحالتين: يقسم علم ميكانيكا الموائع إلى ثلاثة أقسام رئيسية: 1-ستاتيكا الموائع "Fluid Static's" وهو العلم الذي يبحث في الموائع بوضع السكون، 2-كينماتيكا الموائع Fluid Kinematics وهو العلم الذي يبحث في سرعة جريان المائع والتدفق دون التطرق إلى مسببات هذا الجريان من طاقة وقوى مؤثرة، 3-ديناميكا الموائع Fluid dynamic's وهو العلم الذي يبحث في العلاقة بين السرعة والتسارع والضغط والقوى التي يؤثر فيها المائع على المحيط أو القوى التي تؤثر على المائع.
وسوف يتم في هذا الكتاب التركيز وإلقاء الضوء على المفاهيم الأساسية في علم الموائع، وقد تمت هيكلة هذا الكتاب بما يتناسب مع الخطة الدراسية بطلبة الشهادة الجامعية المتوسطة، وتمت الإستعانة حيث أمكن بالأمثلة المحلولة بحيث تعطي ما يفيد في إستخدامات هذه المفاهيم في الحياة العملية، وقدر وعي أن تكون هذه الأمثلة ميسرة ومتناسبة مع المادة النظرية المطروحة في هذا الكتاب.
