من بين الميزات الرئيسية التي تميز الإنسان عن الكائنات الحية الأخرى، الأخلاق، والدليل على ذلك أن الظاهرة الأخلاقية سابقة على الحضارة إذ أنها صاحبت الوجود البشري منذ مراحله الأولى وبهذا فهي سابقة على عملية التفلسف: لا تكذب، لا تسرق، لا تظلم مبادئ أخلاقية لم تنتظر بروز الفلسفة من أجل أن تمثل مرجعية إنسانية في العلاقات بين الأفراد والجماعات. وقد استمرت هذه المبادئ، أو بعضها إلى يومنا هذا لكنها اتسمت بسمات كل مرحلة من المراحل التاريخية التي مر بها التاريخ الإنساني: أخذت طابعا أسطوريا خرافيا في الحضارات الشرقية القديمة (مصر، بابل، الهند، الصين) وهذا نتيجة لسيطرة الخرافة والأسطورة والدين على الفكر، وطابعا نظريا تجريديا مع الفلسفة اليونانية، وطابعا عمليا ابتداء من المرحلة الحديثة نتيجة لسيطرة الفكر العملي كنتيجة للتطور الهائل الذي عرفته العلوم بجميع فروعها خاصة الفرع الذي يعنينا هنا في المقام الأول وهو فرع العلوم البيوتكنولوجية. وقد تاكد هذا التطور العملي إلى درجة أننا أصبحنا نعيش في عالم تقني سيطرت فيه التقنية العلمية على كل مظاهر الحياة بما فيها المظهر الأخلاقي.
إن مثل هذا التطور أدى خاصة في المرحلة المعاصرة – مرحلة بروز البيوإتيقا- إلى إفراز سلطات جديدة على الإنسان تطرح أسئلة عميقة ومحيرة لم تطرح من قبل: ما طبيعة العالم الذي نريده؟ وماهو الإنسان الذي نريد أن نحافظ عليه...؟
