كان أكرم الحوراني واحداً من القادة السياسيين لهذا الجيل، وضع برنامج مبادئ لعمله السياسي، التزم به طيلة فترة عمله في المجال العام وهي: التركيز على الإصلاح الزراعي، ومبدأ الديمقراطية والنظام الجمهوري، وعدم الانحياز.
وكان الحوراني أيضاً زعيماً يتمتع بشعبية واسعة داخل الجيش السوري. وصفه البعض بأنه رجل فعل، وأنه أكثر السياسيين مبدئية، في تلك الفترة. كان للبعث كما لينين للماركسية. لعب دوراً هاماً في رسم طريق التطور السياسي في سورية ودفعها باتجاه أكثر تحرراً.
لقد ترجمت هذه الدراسة وفاء ابنة أكرم الحوراني، فسجلت عليها بدقة ملاحظات والدها وخاصة في القضايا التي لا بدّ من إيضاحها.
