عرف بيتر بنشلي الشهرة من طريق نشر روايته "Jaws" التي غدت الأكثر رواجاً. وكان اهتمامه بأسماك القرش قد بدأ في سني شبابه الأولى، حين كان يقطن في نانتوكيت في ولاية مساشوستس، إذ كان يشتري الكثير من المجلات ليقرأ عن هذه الأسماك بشغف كبير.
وفي سنة 1964 تكونت لديه فكرة عن "Jaws" (الفكوك أو أسنان البحر)، حيث قرأ في الصحف عن صياد في "لونغ آيلند" تمكن من القبض على سمكة قرش بيضاء كبيرة تزن طنين، وراح يفكر: ماذا يمكن أن يحدث لو أن واحدة من هذه الأسماك المخيفة وصلت إلى شواطئ أميركا وراحت تجوب المياه فيها؟
وقد لاقت هذه الرواية رواجاً منقطع النظير، وبقيت "الكتاب" الأكثر رواجاً في رأس قائمة الكتب الأكثر منيعا في صحيفة "نيويورك تايمز". ثم عرضت الرواية في دور السينما لتحصد بذلك الإعجاب الكبير، كما لتنشر الذعر في الوقت نفسه.
