الشعراء عند العرب على طبقات، جاهليون، مخضرمون وإسلاميون، والجاهليون بلغ احتفاءهم بالشعر والشعراء أن اختاروا عدداً من القصائد وعلقوها على جدار الكعبة، وهي المعلقات. وقد تصدى عدد من الكتاب والنقاد لشرح هذه المعلقات التعليق عليها. كما في هذا الكتاب الذي يضم شرح المعلقات التسع لأبي عمرو الشيباني وأصل الكتاب مخطوطة كتب بخط جيد مقروء غير أنه الرطوبة أصابت بعض أجزائها فعمد المحقق إلى تصحيح ما أفسدته الرطوبة عن المصادر الأخرى المعتمدة.
كما رجع لمقارنة هذه النسخة الوحيدة إلى كتب من درسوا المعلقات مثل الزوزني، والشنقيطي الخطابي والتبريزي، فوازن بين الشروح الموجودة في كتبهم وشرح المخطوطة واعتمد على التبريزي اعتماداً واضحاً. وبين الفروق في الشروح ووضع كل ذلك في الحاشية وأعطى معنى الأبيات شرح ما لم يتطرق أحد لشرحه من قبل وتعرض للروايات المختلفة للبيت الواحد.
