أصبحت الأساليب الإحصائية من الوسائل الرئيسية التي يعتمد عليها الباحث في مجال الدراسات الجغرافية اعتماداً كبيراً، كما بدأ التحليل الكمي في الجغرافيا يجد طريقه ضمن مناهج الدراسة في المرحلة الجامعية الأولى بأقسام الجغرافيا في معظم الجامعات العربية، وشهدت المكتبة العربية ظهور عدد من المؤلفات في هذا المجال تتباين في محتواها ومنحاها وإن كانت تهدف في النهاية إلى إبراز أهمية التحليل الكمي في مجال الدراسات الجغرافية بفروعها المختلفة.
وهذا الكتاب "مدخل إلى التحليل الإحصائي في الجغرافيا البشرية" تطوير لكتيب سبق أن صدر منذ سنوات، حيث تمت الإضافة إليه كثيراً من الجوانب التحليلية التي تهم الجغرافي في مجال جمع البيانات والمقارنات والفوارق بين الظاهرات المترابطة ثم بعض جوانب التحليل الإحصائي في جغرافية السكان، وكان الهدف من البداية وما يزال هو أن يكون هذا الكتاب أبسط ما يكون أسلوباً وتناولاً لأساليب التحليل المختلفة مراعاة لحقيقة هامة هي أن جل الطلاب الذين تخصصوا في علم الجغرافيا قد لا يتيسر لهم تقبل حديث الأرقام بارتياح يساعد على فهم هذه الأساليب. ومن هنا كان هذا الكتاب الذي يمثل محتواه الحد الأدنى من الأساليب الإحصائية التي ينبغي على طالب الجغرافيا أن يكون ملماً بها حتى يقف على كيفية التعامل مع الرقم والوصول به عبر بعض الأساليب إلى نتائج أكثر دقة للظاهرات الجغرافية التي يدرسها.
على أنه ينبغي أن نوضح منذ البداية أن هذه الأساليب الإحصائية البسيطة التي تلزم الباحث الجغرافي ليست هدفاً للبحث بل وسيلة من وسائله، فالجغرافي ليس إحصائياً بالضرورة ولكنه يأخذ من الإحصاء-مثلما يأخذ من بقية فروع المعرفة-ما يعنيه على إجراء بحثه والوصول به إلى نتائج دقيقة تعين واضع السياسة وصانع القرار وذلك في المجال التطبيقي لعلم الجغرافيا بفروع المتعددة.
ويحوي هذا الكتاب ستة موضوعات رئيسية تنتظم في عدد مماثل من الفصول بالإضافة إلى دراسة تطبيقية لبعض الأساليب المستخدمة في التعامل الرقمي في جغرافية السكان. وهذه الموضوعات هي كيفية جمع البيانات الإحصائية ثم العرض الجدولي وقياس النموذج (المتوسطات) والتشتت والمقارنات والمعنوية وذلك اعتماداً على بعض المراجع الرئيسية لعل أهمها كتاب: Toyne P. and Newby P., Techniques in Human Geography, Macmillan Education, London, 1984.
