لفت الدكتور جمال مقابلة الانتباه إلى حادثة الإسراء والمعراج في الأدب العالميّ، ولعلّ أصداء المعراج في الأدب العالميّ، ولاسيّما في الكوميديا الإلهيّة للشاعر والمفكّر السياسي دانتي الأليجييري، كانت دافعاً وراء اختياره موضوع "تجليات الإسراء والمعراج في الأدب العربيّ"، وهو اختيار حصيف يجد مسوّغاته المنطقيّة المهمّة تسعفه المادّة الهائلة التي تفاعلت مع الوجدان الشعبي الإسلاميّ وما تحدّر إلى الثقافة الإسلاميّة وحضارتها من روافد من ثقافات وحصارات عديدة ومتباينة.
ومن الطبيعيّ أن يجتهد الدكتور جمال مقابلة في بحثه للوقوف عند المصادر الأساسيّة التي فجّرت هذه الآثار الكبيرة ليعاين حجم التحوّلات في الخيال الشعبيّ والجمعيّ، فوقف عند الإحاديث المتّصلة بالحادثة وقفة محقق ودقق مستعيناً، كما ينبغي لعالم، بالعلماء والمحقّقين من أصحاب الخبرة والعلم والفضل، بروح الباحث دوماً عن الحقيقة. إذ انطلق في التمهيد من حادثة الإسراء والمعراج في القرآن الكريم والأحاديث الصحيحة ليرى كيف امتدّت الحادثة من بعدها المعرفيّ الموجز إلى آفاق التأويل والتخييل، وإلى رحاب المجاز ةالاستعارة والترميز والسيمياء.
ولم تقف معالجة هذا الكتاب للنثر في التراث العربي القديم وحده، وإنّما طمحت إلى دراسة أثر هذه الحادثة في فنون النثر العربيّ الحديث في القصّة القصيرة والرواية والمسرحيّة.
وقد حرص المؤلّف على ألا يقف عند الآثار الفكريّة والمضمونيّة والمشابهات والتماثلات حسب، وإنما التفت، ما أسعفته المادّة والمنهج، إلى الجوانب الفنيّة؛ على نحو ما نرى في بناء المعراج الصوفيّ وأسلوبه الفنيّ، وفي مواطن أخرى متعدّدة.
