علم الدلالة علم واسع، متداخل الأجزاء، له علاقات متسعة مع المستويات اللغوية الأخرى من صوتية وصرفية ونحوية وبنائية، إضافة إلى علاقاته بالعلوم الأخرى كالفلسفة وعلم النفس وعلم الإجتماع وغيرها من العلوم التي تتشابك معه.
وفي هذا العمل تتبع المؤلف إهتمامات علم الدلالة من حيث المفاهيم والأفكار والنظريات التي ظهرت في جهود العلماء العرب القدامى من خلال النظر في مصنفاتهم في هذا المجال.
وقد توصل إلى تسجيل نقاط مفيدة من حيث النظرية في التعريف بعلم الدلالة بنظرة تاريخية وتطورية معاصرة، وتطبيق الكثير من المفاهيم والنظريات الدلالية، معتمداً على منهج وصفي تحليلي، مع الموازنة والمقاربة بين ما قدّمه اللغويون العرب القدماء وما طوّره اللغويون المحدثون من عرب وأجانب.
حيث وزع العمل إلى قسمين رئيسين: الأول: القسم النظري، الثاني: القسم التطبيقي، وجاء القسم النظري في خمسة أبواب: الباب الأول عرّف بالدلالة، أما الباب الثاني فتناول مناهج دراسة المعنى، والباب الثالث عنوانه العوامل المؤثرة في تغيّر المعنى، والباب الرابع اهتم بقضايا تعدد اللفظ للمعنى وتعدد المعنى اللفظ.
وأما الباب الخامس فبحث في دور الدلالة في الترجمة، أما القسم التطبيقي فيبدأ بتمهيد يحدد ثلاثة عناوين أساسية للتطبيق: نظرية السياق - نظرية الحقول الدلالية - نظرية التحليل التكويني.
