إن الله تعالى حفظ هذا الدين بحفظه لكتابه العزيز وسنة نبيه الكريم حين قال( إنا نحن نزلنا الذكر وإنا له لحافظون). حيث هيأ الله تعالى للقرآن الكريم حفظة وكتبة فكتب بأمر النبي عليه السلام وبإشراقه على التمام والكمال. أما السنة النبوية فكتب بعضها وحفظ بعضها الآخر وترك النبي عليه السلام مهمة نقلها الى الأمناء من الصحابة بعد أن غرس فيهم الإيمان والصدق, وهكذا هيأ الله لسنة نبيه عليه الصلاة والسلام رجالاً أمناء في كل عصر ومصر ينفون عنها تحريف الغالين وانتحال المبطلين وتأويل الجاهلين. جاعلين لكل رواية سلسلة من السند من أولها الى آخرها وهذه خصيصة لهذه الأمة, فعرفوا طبقات الرواة ومواليدهم وأحوالهم وشيوخهم وتلاميذهم فنشأ من ذلك علم واسع عرف بعلم الرجال. ويعد هذا الكتاب المحاولة الأولى التي تجمع شيوخ وتلاميذ بعض الأئمة في مكان واحد.
