إن كتاب "المستدرك على الصحيحين" للإمام الحافظ أبي عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله الحاكم النيسابوري يعتبر من مصادر السنة النبوية المهمة التي حوت قدراً كبيراً من الحديث الصحيح. فقد أودع فيه صاحبه من الأحاديث الصحيحة ما ليس عن الشيخين البخاري ومسلم ما رآه على شرطيها-وهو أعلى درجات الصحيح-أو على شرط البخاري وحده، على شرك مسلم وحده، وما أداه اجتهاده إلى تصحيحه وإن لم يكن على شرط واحد منها.
ونظراً لهذه المكانة الرفيعة التي يحتلها الكتاب، فقد عمل الدكتور يوسف عبد الرحمن المرعشلي عليه وذلك لتسهيل الرجوع إليه من قبل الباحثين. لذا فقد وضع فهارس لأحاديثه تساعد الباحث فيه على استخراج طلبه منه بسهولة.
وقد مهد لهذا الفهرس بمقدمة ذكر فيها قيمة الكتاب "المستدرك" عند جمهور المسلمين وأقوال العلماء فيه، وذكر كلمة عن علم الفهرسة ومناهجه وأنظمته، وعن فهرسة الحديث وتطورها، وختم هذه المقدمة ببيان طريقة عمله في تنظيم هذا الفهرس. وقد وضع للكتاب فهرسين.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب ضمن سلسلة من فهارس كتب السنة النبوية الشريفة قام بوضعها، وقد صدرها برسالة صغيرة سمّاها "علم فهرسة الحديث نشأته وتطوره وأشهر ما دوّن فيه" ثم ألحقها بفهارس لأهم مصادر السنة.
