تخرج من جامعة بيروت من كلية الآداب قسم جغرافيا في العام 1969، وحصل على ماجستير بالدراسات الإسلامية والتاريخية والجغرافية من معهد الدراسات الإسلامية العالي بالقاهرة عام 1978، ثم نال شهادة الدكتوراه في العلوم السياسية والاجتماعية من جامعة كامبردج البريطانية، وهو يعد صاحب أول نص درامي بدوي وذلك من خلال كتابته لقصة مسلسل وضحه وبن عجلان الذي أنتج في العام 1975.

...وجدت أن تدريسي بجامعة اليرموك فرصة طيبة لتكليف طلابي بإجراء بحوث كل عن قريته وعشيرته. وفي البداية كنت ألقي اللوم من بعضهم أنني لم أذكرهم في كتبي. فأقول له: هات ما عندك وعندهم. حتى إذا ما مضى عليه بضعة أسابيع عاد يطلب إلي تغيير البحث. وعندما أسأل عن السبب (وأنا أعرفه) يقول إنه لم يجد معلومات، أو أن الناس سخروا منه. أو أن مشاكل نشبت بين العشيرة حول الموضوع، أو أم جماعته امتنعوا عن الإدلاء له بأية معلومات، أو أنهم قالوا له: أنت صغير. حينها أقول له: هل آمنت الآن وعرفت سبب عدم كتابتي عن عشيرتك؟ فيقول: لا لوم عليك ولا تثريب.
وبناءً على كل ما سبق وذكرنا، رأيت أن أتخذ وسيلة جديدة، وهي البحث عن المخطوطات، والمذكرات، والوثائق، والرسائل المكتوبة، ورأيت أن أضمنها بين دفتي كتابنا الذي نحن بصدده. وهو الجزء الثاني من العشائر الأردنية لعل من بحوزته معلومات خطية شبيهة أن يزودني بها، كما اعتمدت بعض المعلومات التي زودني بها بعض طلابي، وقدموها لنا ضمن بحوث تحت إشرافنا وتوجيهنا، موثقة بالروايات والأدلة اللازمة والبحث الميداني، وأسماء الرواة والمصادر. بحيث كتب كل واحد عن عشيرته لا عن أحد سواها.
وقد اشتمل هذا الكتاب على عدد من المخطوطات والوثائق والمذكرات الهامة، منها مذكرات صالح مصطفى التل، وجزء من مذكرات ووثائق حسين الطراونة، وأمين محمد الخصاونة، هذا بالإضافة إلى وثائق أخرى ومعلومات عن جشرات أنساب العشائر. وقد قسمت الكتاب إلى قسمين يشتمل الأول على المعلومات ويشتمل الثاني على نسخة عن بعض الوثائق.
