يعتبر كتاب "الرياض" للكرماني من الكتب المهمة التي تعبر عن النظريات الإسماعيلية الفلسفية في القرن الرابع هجري، وقد وصلتني منه نسختان الأولى من الهند، والثانية من طهران أرسلها إليّ المستشرق العلامة "و. إيفانوف w. Lvanov" بناء على تكليف جمعية الدراسات الإسماعيلية في الهند "The Ismsilia - Society" التي رغبت إليّ بتحقيق الكتاب وشرحه وكتابة هوامشه وتعليقاته بإعتباري أحد أعضاء هذه الجمعية العاملين.
ولا بد لي قبل الدخول بالبحث والتفصيل، وإستعراض ما جاء في الكتاب من آراء وأقوال وحجج وأبيات، من إيراد لمحة بسيطة عن حياة الفلاسفة الثلاث الذين اشتركوا بالمناقشة وهم الرازي، والسجستاني والكرماني.
