يحقق هذا الكتاب متعة أدبية بنشره لأخبار وأشعار عشاق العامية النجدية مع ربطه ببعض قصص العشاق من أهل العربية الفصحى، أو الربط بشيئ من شعرهم، أو الربط بشيئ من دراسات فلاسفة الغرام.
وعليه، تضمن الكتاب أخبار غرامية عن قيس وليلى... وعشاق بني عذرة... وبشر الأسدي وهند الجهنية... وأبي زيد وعلياء... وفهد الشعلان وقوت... والدجيما والوليعي... وغيرهم، وأحوال العشاق بين العلم والرواية التاريخية والأسطورة.
وقد ضم الباب الأول ثلاثة ومراحل من مكملات البحث كان الأول إطلالة على كتب التراث التي بحثت أحوال العشاق، وجعل الثاني عن فلسفة حوك الأسطورة عند الحكواتي النجدي، وجاء الثالث بعنوان: "كيف يمود العباد" الذي يتطرق إلى مسألة موت العشاق، وأما البابين الثاني والثالث فقد عالجا أحوال العاشق على خمسة أنحاء: عشاق يعتصم بربه ويتداوى بالمباح فيعود إليه عقله ويستقيم سلوكه، عاشق يظفر ببغيته وينعم بالوصل، أو محب غير عاشق ينعم بالوصل فيموت غرامه، لأن الحب إذا نكح فسد، عاشق لم ينعم بالوصل، واستعذب بكاءه، وأجهش للتوباد فاختلط فكان مجنون غرام، عاشق لا يموت رخيصاً، ولكنه لا يُمتَّع بصحته بل يوافيه الأجل بعد سنين من الهم والتحول والضنى، عاشق يموت بشهقة.
وعليه، يستعرض هذا الكتاب القصص الغرامية بين الأدب الفصيح والأدب العامي، ويبين قدرة الحكواتي النجدي على نسج الأسطورة.
