تعتمد الشيعة الإمامية أن الحاجة إلى الإمام هي الحاجة إلى النبي، فبعد مضي كل نبي من الأنبياء (عليهم السلام) لا بد من وصيّ يقتضي به الناس ليكون هادياً لهم في دينهم ودنياهم، وفي هذا يقول رسول الله (ص): "علي راية الهدى .. هذا الواقع يفرض على علماء الدين مسؤولية حمل لواء الإيمان وحث الناس على التمسك بالعروة الوثقى. في زمن غيبة الإمام، يقول الشيخ الطوسي في كتاب الغيبة: "واجعلوا قصدكم إلينا بالمودة على السنة الواضحة". وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع المؤلف الروايات الواردة في ذلك أي "في خصوص ما كان في مضامينها وظيفة من تكاليف زمن الغيبة، تضمنت خمسة فصول يتحدث الأول منها: في أفضلية أهل الإيمان في زمن الغيبة والثاني: في النصوص الواردة في أهم ما يجب مراعاته في آخر الزمان، والثالث: في معرفة الإمام المهدي وما يمتاز به عن غيره، والرابع: في علامات ظهوره، والخامس والأخير في ما يجب مراعاته عند ظهوره مثل: المسارعة إليه والإنقياد له وكيفية مخاطبته ...الخ.
