قد يكون الناس مختلفين كثيراً في بُناهم وأمزجتهم الطبيعية عند الولادة، ولكن المجتمع هو الذي جعل من الطفل الصغير بإمكاناته النفسية القابلة للتطويع وغير المتمايزة نسبياً، كائناً متمايزاً عن الآخرين.
لا يتعلم الكائن البشري التلفظ والنطق بالكلام إلا حينما ينمو في ظل رابطة من الناس، ولا يتشكل لديه بالتدريج نوع من بعد النظر وإمكانية التحكم بغرائزه، إلا مع أناس أكبر منه سناً، وفي النهاية تتعلق اللغة التي يتكلمها وأسلوبه بالتحكم بالغرائز، يتعلق كل هذا بالتاريخ وببنية الرابطة البشرية التي ينمو معها وفيها.
لنتصور مجموعة من الأشخاص الراقصين كرمز للمجتمع، فالخطوات والإنحناءات والتعابير والحركات، كلها على توافق مع مثيلاتها لدى الراقصات والراقصين الآخرين، وإذا نظرنا إلى هؤلاء الأفراد كلاً على حدة، فلن نستطيع ان نتبيّن معنى حركاته ومدلولاتها، فالطريقة التي يتحرك بها الفرد هنا محددة بلا ريب من خلال علاقته بالراقصين الآخرين، وشبيه بذلك سلوك الأفراد بعامة، فهذا السلوك ليس إلا نتيجة علاقات سابقة أو حالية من أناس آخرين، وحتى إذا لجأ الفرد إلى العزلة التامة عن كل الناس الآخرين، فإنّ تعابيره ليست إبلا تلك الناشئة من خلال علاقته مع الآخرين.
