صدر العدد الفصلي الثاني من مجلة التراث الشعبي عام 1988 خاصاً بشارع الرشيد وقد شارك فيه عدد من الباحثين الفلكلوريين والفنانين والأدباء والمؤرخين تعبيراً عن حبهم لبغداد وشارعها الرئيس (الرشيد) الذي كان بداية للتحولات المعمارية الحديثة في بغداد كجزء من وظيفة سوسيولوجية إضافة لعدة وظائف أخرى فنية وصحافية وسياسية تكشف عنها بحوث هذا الكتاب.
كانت هذه أول مرة في تاريخ الفولكلور وصحافته أن تصدر مجلة عدداً عن شارع ما وقد تلقف القراء ذلك العدد الذي عد وثيقة مثلى، فولكلورية واجتماعية فقد عبر تاريخ شارع الرشيد عن مجمل التطورات الاجتماعية والسياسية التي رافقت بناء العراق الحديث وكان مهداً للتطورات والمواقف السياسية الجماهيرية اعتباراً من ثورة العشرين حتى قيام ثورة 17-30 تموز 1968 وما صاحبها من تقدم في كافة الأصعدة الاجتماعية والسياسية.
وبالنظر لأهمية هذه الوثيقة فقد اعتنى بإعدادها على هيئة كتاب هو الذي بين يدينا وذلك بهدف إعادة قراءة جزء حيوي من الذاكرة الشعبية المتجسدة في صياغة هذا الشارع وحواريه وأصنافه ومثاباته الفنية والاجتماعية. ولتصح الصورة شاملة عن مجد هذا الشارع وفسيفسائه الفلوكلورية أضيف للمتن بعض الوثائق الفولكلورية الأخرى المنشورة في العدد الفصلي الثالث لعام 1988 كبحوث مستقلة عن الشارع، كما وأضيف إلى البحوث متن الفصل الذي جاء في كتاب "بغداد في العشرينات" للسيد عباس بغدادي والمتعلق بشارع الرشيد. وذلك لأهمية وقيمة الوثائقية، هذا إلى جانب الجزء المتعلق بهذا الشارع والذي جاء في ضمن دراسة الدكتور إحسان فتحي ومقالة فخري الزبيدي "بغداد من 1900 حتى سنة 1934"، وذلك لما تثيره هذه المقالة من مسائل تاريخية ولكي تغدو مادة هذا الكتاب متكاملة إلى حدّ يرضي القارئ.
