في كتابه هذا يتحدث حسيب القباني عن (فن كتابة القصة) ويعني بذلك القواعد والأصول وفنية الصياغة في الكتابة القصصية، والغاية أن يدرك كل كاتب جدبد أن ما سيكتبه سوف يجد طريقه للنشر.
ولأجل هذه الغاية، يبدأ المؤلف بالحديث عن (موضوع القصة)، وعن الوسائل التي يمكن بها الحصول على عدد لا حصر له من الموضوعات التي يمكن أن يصاع من كل منها قصة صالحة للنشر، وهي في مضمونها تشكل بمثابة عرض لأهم وأبرز الخطوط الرئيسية التي لا مندوحة للمبتدىء من الأخذ بها إذا شاء أن ينجح ككاتب قصصي.
وفي هذا السياق أيضاً، يعرض المؤلف أنواع القصة، ومنها المطولة "الرواية" والقصة المتوسطة، والقصة القصيرة. وللقصة القصيرة يذكر أنواع مختلفة منها: القصة العادية أو العامة .. والقصة التحليلية "الأدبية أو الفنية". أما الحديث عن (هيكل القصة) فيشرح فيه المؤلف: العقدة أو المأزق أو الهدف، والصراع "أي الحركة والتصرف" ، والنتيجة "أو النهاية"، بعد ذلك يتطرق إلى (الحوار في القصة) ويدرج ملاحظات يتجنب من خلالها كاتب القصة الكثير من الأخطاء، فيقدم له عشرة نصائح، منها أن على الكاتب أن يخفف من رتابة الحوار وتدفقه بعبارات تتخلل كل ثلاث أو أربع فقرات حوارية حتى لا يخلط القارىء بين الشخصيتين المتحدثتين .. وغيرها من قواعد أو نصائح، ويضرب على ذلك امثلة، أما (القصة التحليلية) فيخصص لها المؤلف فصلاً خاصاً، يوضح فيه اختلافها عن القصة العامة، ويعرض كذلك قواعد وأصول هذا النموذج من القصص وفن كتابتها (...) وموضوعات أخرى ذات صلة.
