قام الأب كمال قلته بزيارة طه حسين في منزله ، ليحدد له بعض النقاط الأساسية في البحث الذي يعده لنيل درجة الماجستير في الآداب ، بعنوان " طه حسين وأثر الثقافة الفرنسية في أدبه " . وفي الزيارة الثانية قرأ الأب بعض فقرات البحث على مسامع طه حسين . وقد رفض طه حسين كلمة " فيلسوف " وفضّل عليها كلمة " مفكر " .
وعلى هذا الأساس جعل الأب الباحث " طه حسين المفكر " عنوان الفصل الأول من الباب الثاني . ويذكر له طه حسين أن مثله الأعلى أو العلاء المعري ، ذلك الذي وقف حياته منذ قرون طوال في دار من دور المعرة على الدرس ممعناً فيه ، غير معني إلا به ، محرماً على نفسه ما أباح الله للناس من طيبات الحياة . ومعروف أن المعري شاعر حكيم قبل عزلته الطويلة للناس وحكيم شاعر في أثناء عزلته .
