الحجاج بن يوسف الثقفي أشغل كثيراً من المؤرخين والأدباء القدامى، ومن تحدث عن العصر الأموي، وقد نسج بعضهم حوله الحكايات والروايات، وسجل الأحداث والأحوال والأفعال مجردة من أسبابها وظروفها، ووضعه على ألسنة الناس. وهكذا غطت هذه الشهرة-والشهرة آفة-على أعمال الحجاج التي قام بها كرجل دولة قضى على الفوضى والاضطرابات والثورات المسلمة الخطيرة، وحقق الأمن والاستقرار في بلاد مترامية الأطراف تضم شعوباً وقبائل مختلفة، ولغات عديدة، وعصبيات ورواسب من أحقاد، ومذاهب دينية وسياسية، ثم وسع الدولة إلى حدود الصين والهند، إلى غير ذلك من الأعمال التي لم يسبقه إليها أحد، ولا يزال بعضها باقياً. من هنا انبثقت فكرة هذا الكتاب لدى الباحث ليقدم الحجاج للقارئ وذلك من خلال دراسة موضوعية بعيدة عن العاطفة.
