في كتابه هذا يدرس الدكتور شوكت حجه تاريخ الغزو المغولي للعالم الإسلامي فيسلط الضوء على "العلاقات بين دولة المماليك الأولى ودولة إيلخانية فارس" للفترة [1250-1335م]، حيث قسّم العلاقات بينها غلى مرحلتين متباينتين: ففي المرحلة الأولى-مرحلة العدائية-هاجم المغول بلاد الشام مرات عدة، واحتلوها عامي (1260م) و(1300م)، في محاولة منهم للوصول إلى مصر، وقاموا بأعمال بربرية، من مثل: التخريب والتدمير وغيرها، مما أدى إلى نتائج اقتصادية واجتماعية وسياسية ودينية مهمة، انعكست بشكل سلبي على المجتمع الإسلامي في إيران والعراق ودولة المماليك.
أما المرحلة الثانية-المرحلة السلمية-فقد جاءت نتيجة لعوامل عدة، كان ابرز ما يخص المماليك فيها، أنهم وقفوا نداً قوياً أمام الإيلخانيين، وأفشلوا أهدافهم في احتلالهم الشام، والعبور منها غلى مصر للقضاء على دولتهم.
عن تلك الفترة التاريخية الحافلة بالأحداث السياسية بما فيها من صراعات سياسية وتكالب على النفوذ في بلاد الشام ومصر؛ يكتب الدكتور شوكت حجه، بهدف تبيان الدوافع الأساسية للغزو المغولي، ومواقف القوى الفرنجية في الشام من الغزو المغولي، وكذلك مواقف القوى الأيوبية من الغزو المغولي للشام الذين فقدوا سلطتهم الشرعية، لعجزهم ونكوصهم عن حماية أرض الإسلام وغير ذلك كثير مما حملته هذه الدراسة من أحداث ووقائع، سيجدها القارئ بتفاصيلها الدقيقة، وخاصة أن الكاتب قد اعتمد على وثائق وخرائط ومراجع غنية بما فيها من المصادر المملوكية، والمصادر الفارسية، وكذلك الإسلامية القديمة منها والحديثة.
