في هذا الكتاب يجمع عبد الله بن سليم الرشيد دراسات في الشعر العربي، عرض فيها للشعر تليدِه وطريفهِ، فكان بين سطوره، قارئاً محاوراً، مستكشفاً مستبشراً، وهي في مضمونها دراسات عمل على نشرها سابقاً كأبحاث ومقالات في عدد من المجلات العلمية المحكمة وغيرها، عمل فيها القلم حذفاً وإضافة، تعديلاً وتبديلاً، مستضيئاً كما يقول بما أسداه إليه من قرؤوها في صيغتها الأولى، مستمداً من بعض القراءات فكراً جديداً أو نصوصاً طريفة رأى فيها ما يُغني المسائل المدروسة.
وقد آثر المؤلف بداية الكتاب عن (القصائد المقصورة) لأهميتها فدرس تاريخها وتطوّرها ودلالاتها الإيقاعية وهي "مما بنت العرب عليه قوافيها الألف اللينية أو المقصورة، وقد اشتهرت القصائد التي روّيها الألف بإسم القصائد المقصورة"، ثم أتبع ذلك بسائر المقالات البحثية، مبتدئاً ببحث يعرض لأثر الرواية والإختيار في تدوين الشعر، فوقف على قصة شعرية نادرة من أدب العرب القديم كما درس "نونية ذي الإصبع العدواني نموذجاً"، وألحقها بتحقيق عن المرويات الأدبية ضرورته ومنهجه. هذا قي القسم الأول من الكتاب. أما القسم الثاني فكان في "الشعر الحديث"، وفيه مقالات ثلاث، خصص الأولى لبعض شعر (البردوني) تحقيقاً وتحليلاً، ثم انتقل مستعرضاً شخصية المتنبي في قصيدتين للبردوني والجواهري، وختم بمقالة عامة عن (الشعرية) ويعني بها هنا (التصوير الفني القائم على الخيال" كفاية بذاتها. لذلك يقول "نحتاج إلى التخفيف من حدة الشعرية".
