يندرج هذا الكتاب الموسوم بمدخل لتاريخية الأناجيل الأربعة للباحث محمد زركان ضمن الأعمال العلمية التي شقت الطريق بأريحية وكفاءة عاليتين نحو علم مقارنة الأديان . هذا العلم الحديث النشأة الذي وقع في عالمنا العربي والإسلامي حيناً من الدهر في قبضة بعض أنواع الخطابات ( خطابات دعوية وغيرها ) ، فجردته من نسمة القراءة الموضوعية ، ومن روح التجرد من الأفكار القبلية ، ولفته بغشاوة من الجهل المطبق ، فلم يكن غريباً ، والحالة هذه ، أن يتحول بين أيديها إلى آلة صماء لزرع بذور الكراهية .
قد يكون من الصعب أن على الإنسان الذي يؤمن بعقيدة ما أن يتخلى تماماً عن عدسة " الذاتية " وهو يقوم بعملية مقاربة علمية للكتاب المقدس بعهديه ( القديم والجديد بلغة المسيحيين ) ، ويزداد الأمر تعقيداً حينما تتدخل عوامل خارجية يتداخل فيها ما هو سياسي بما هو إيديولوجي . غير أنه لا وجود لأي مبرر يدعو أن أتمترس خلف حائط من الجهل ، مصوباً سهام النقد بأسلحة انتهت صلاحيتها . نحن نحتاج في هذه المرحلة الأولى الذي تشهد تأسيس علم مقارنة الأديان أن نركّز بالدرجة الأولى على معرفتنا بهذه الأديان ( مسيحية ويهودية وغيرهما من الأديان الأخرى الوضعية ) ، وأن نحيط بكل ما يتعلق بكتبها المقدسة ، وبعقائدها ، وبعلمائها ، وبتاريخ نشأتها ، وبالتحولات التي طرأت عليها على امتداد تاريخها الطويل . إذ من المخجل أن نكون أقل علماً ، وأضعف زاذاً من علمائنا المسلمين القدامى الذين ، على الرغم من ندرة الكتب المتعلقة باليهودية والمسيحية ، أبلوا بلاءً حسناً في التعرّف عليهما . ولا يضيرنا كثيراً أن يتخلل تلك المعرفة الموسوعية التهجّم أحياناً عليهما في وقت كان إظهار المثالب أمراً مقبولاً ومستساغاً يتقاسمه أتباع الديانات الثلاث في كتاباتهم الجدلية .
